African representation in the ongoing World Youth Championship has come to an abrupt halt as all four African candidates in the competition have been sent packing from the round of 16.
Initially, Cameroon was the only side not to have made it to the knockout phase whilst Angola, Senegal and Nigeria were tagged as favorites prior to the commencement of the Youth mundial.
Cameroon lost all group games to Tajikistan, Argentina, and Spain, 1-0, 1-3 and 0-2 respectively. Inevitably results that cannot sail them through to the knockout phase of the championship.
Debutants Angola garnered results that propelled them into the last 16 but saw their renaissance brought to a disappointing conclusion after they were dumped by Asian heavyweights, Korea Republic by just a lone goal.
Nigeria really enjoyed in the group stage beating Hungary 4-2, Ecuador 3-2 and Australia 2-1 winning all their group stage matches with two tennis scores. Unfortunately, they were paired with European youth champions, Netherlands who crushed them out of the Youth Championship by three goals to one.
Senegal, the fourth African Representative also had a great group stage nailing USA 4-1, Holland 3-1 and losing the final group game to Japan by one goal to nil. In the round of 16 Senegal was not fortunate to be paired with European powerhouse Spain who edged them out of the competition by two goals to one.
Indeed, they went, they saw but could not conquer.
