For the second time in the history of the KNUST SRC administration arguably, some student parliamentarians are on the verge of going out of the house without any allowances nor certificates. Some appointees may also not get certificates for their work under the Adu Baah Charles (ABC) led SRC administration.
Some appointees of the administration who spoke to Campus360 under anonymity lamented the decision and accused the SRC President of mismanaging funds.
According to a communique intercepted by our news team from the Speaker of the SRC Parliamentary Council, Rt. Hon Hunvilla Asamoah, the SRC President said there is no money to print certificates which cost as low as Ghc 4.00, for the parliamentarians.
“No allowance for Parliamentarians. Only leadership of Parliament and Non Residential caucus will be given allowances. No money for printing of certificates for SRC parliamentarians,” the speaker said according to sources familiar with the matter.
The speaker in order to calm nerves, has decided that he will print the certificates for members of the house from the meagre allowance he has received.
Last two semesters, the parliamentary council approved more than Ghc 800,000 for the running of administration business. However, the council couldn’t approve any funds for the second semester due to the absenteeism of the financial secretary, Maxwell Danso Boakye from the budget sitting.
Another source said the SRC couldn’t get much from the fees paid by students during the second semester. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, more than 11,000 students were allowed to register and write exams without paying their fees in full, a situation which has deepened the financial woes of the SRC.
Parliamentarians who have funds allocated to their outfit for running their day to day affairs like the college caucus for example, were asked to pay their own allowances from their coffers. Other caucuses like Non-re and co will be paid their allowances by the administration.
Meanwhile, a number of MP’s who spoke under anonymity accused the SRC President of mismanaging funds. They said he is deliberately refusing to pay the allowances while using COVID and limited resources as an excuse.
